Why does this game use Sega Genesis music and art?

You are probably wanting to know why does this game use music from the Sega Genesis, as well as sprites and art that's based on the system? Well for the third post, I will tell you why I made this game like a Sega game from the 16-bit era.

About the use of Sega Genesis Music

I decided to use music from the Sega Genesis after listening to various music tracks from various games. During the process of thinking of which music goes where, I used a spreadsheet to plan: "what track of which game does this area/scene use?"

For example, the stage 5-6, the "Raving Reeking Waters" level, contains bubbles and water, as well as being set at the entrance of the "H Water Filtration Plant". I decided to use "Sunken Ship" from the game "McDonalds Treasure Land Adventure" by Sega and Treasure, because of it's bubbly mood, and it fitting in a water-themed level. The next level, 5-7, called "H Water Filtration Plant" contains a lot more water as you set deeper in the plant, and the music that plays is "Starfall Lake" from "Puggsy" by Traveller's Tales and Psygnosis, because of how calming and relaxing it is as you go in the level's underwater sections.

In the end, I ended up with about 161 different tracks from about sixty-eight different games. The music will be credited in the game's staff roll.

The game's 16-bit "Genesis" style art

Besides the music, I also planned on making H-Venture II's art style mimic how the Sega Genesis uses it's sprite work in their games. To get technical, the Sega Genesis uses the Sega 315-5313 (Yamaha YM7101) Video Display Processor, which provides a 9-bit RGB palette (512 colors, up to approximately 1500 including shadow and highlight mode) with up to 61 colors on-screen at once without raster effects. This is why I will be sticking to this palette while making my sprites and artwork (yes, even the cutscene art and title cards!) in this game. With these restrictions, I will be making a foray into the Pixel Art genre of art design, too.

With these art-styles, combined with the music, players will think that they are playing a long-lost Sega Genesis game from the 90's!

You can see all of the music used in H-Venture II here in this spreadsheet: Music Choices In H-Venture II
